The sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the county. Primary responsibilities include operations of the county jail, courtroom security and transportation of inmates. The Sheriff's office also conducts criminal investigations, arrests offenders, serves warrants and civil papers, furnishes bailiffs for all state courts and provides general law enforcement protection.

Don G. Letsinger was a deputy sheriff with Edwards County from 1981 to 1987, Sheriff of Edwards County from 1988 to 1992, Deputy Sheriff Val Verde County, (TNCP, HIDTA, Cross designated DEA) from 1993 to 1994, Deputy Sheriff Kinney County (TNCP, HIDTA, Cross designated DEA) from 1994 to 1995, and Sheriff of Edwards County from 1997 to present.
